The Colfax High boys basketball team had an answer for every Sutter threat Tuesday night, including 6-7, 250-pound center Isaiah Bohmann.

The Falcons cruised into the second round of the CIF Northern California Division IV playoffs with a 69-57 victory at Sutter. Colfax (27-5) advances to face top-seeded St. Mary’s of Berkeley on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Senior Joey Jergo led the Falcons with 20 points while senior Ryan Salmonson added 17 and 10 rebounds battling against Bohmann most of the night.

Bohmann finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds, but fouled out on a 3-point play by Salmonson in the fourth that helped turn back a rally by the Wolves.

“It was a good win for us,” Colfax coach Mike O’Connell said. “We maintained our composure in the fourth quarter when they made a run.”

The Falcons outscored the Wolves 21-11 in the second quarter to pull ahead. In the third they led by as many as 20. Sutter fought back to within eight points on two occasions in the final frame but Jergo and junior Chase Mosier had big buckets to stop Sutter’s run.

Austin Oberg scored 11, Mosier scored eight and Ben Buell provided some quality minutes off the bench, pulling down four rebounds.

St. Mary’s (23-9) will provide a huge test for Colfax. The Panthers don’t have a player taller than 6-4 on their roster, but are on a roll after knocking off Salesian for the North Coast Section title.

“St. Mary’s will be a challenge, but they’re all challenges this time of year,” O’Connell said.
